Design trends for 2017 from THE Premier Kitchen and Bath Show
As an interior designer, it is essential for me to stay up with the newest trends and advancements. Earlier in January, I went to THE premier show for all that is new and fabulous in kitchens and baths; the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS).
Maybe it's because it's something that I was particularly looking for, but I was impressed by all of the different choices in finishes for plumbing faucets. There is a myriad of choices in both warm and cool colors. In cool colors, Vintage Nickel gives the nickel finish that has been popular lately a more distressed finish, and matte black has been around but seems to be gaining in popularity and is appropriate for both the traditional and contemporary styles. In warmer colors, I fell in love with French Gold and there is a beautiful Rose Gold that is following the popularity of that tone in jewelry.
If your lighting and cabinet choices don't include these colors, please don't be afraid to mix. That makes for a more interesting outcome.
Of course, we know that there are technological advancements in other areas of our lives; our televisions and cars. So why shouldn't those advancements find their way into our bathing and cooking areas? On my Facebook page, please check out my live videos - there are demonstrations of smart showering by Moen, where you can control your showering preferences via a cellphone app and Kohler's real rain shower that mimics a more natural rain shower with variations in the stream! What I'm most excited about, though, are the advancements in touchless technology. I'll be advising clients working on new kitchens, on touchless faucets that allow you to turn the faucet on and off without touching it with dirty hands and tools. This technology has been around for a while, but now I believe it has improved and is truly the standard moving forward.
Lighted Mirrors & Cabinets
I've struggled my entire career with the best way to light a bathroom mirror. Those over-the-mirror bars are so popular and are absolutely the worst way to achieve flattering light for grooming. It directs the light down onto your face adding shadows. I like light from the sides of the mirror. Lighted mirrors and cabinets have been around for awhile, but like touchless technology, they're finally gaining in popularity. This is THE best way to achieve flattering light. It places the light from the sides or all around your face for even grooming. LED lighting is the standard now. It renders the truest color and is more energy efficient.
There were many more fabulous things to see at KBIS, but these were some of the highlights for me. Going to shows like KBIS or the Home Furnishings Market is so much fun for me. I just soak in all of the beautiful and new products and can't wait to use them for my clients. Need help with your kitchen or bath? Contact me here.
