How To Select The Perfect Artwork For Your Home

How To Select The Perfect Artwork For Your Home

First, do not just make a trip to Hobby Lobby or Bed Bath and way Beyond, load up your cart with a bunch of stuff that just fills up your walls. That is not the way to do it.  I would rather see people have empty wall space than do that.  Take your time and select some meaningful pieces that speak to you.

This custom stained-glass window, a gift to the husband, became the catalyst and focal point of the powder room and was given a prominent location in the plan in proximity of the front door.  Also vintage turqoise jewelry framed in a black shadow box stands out on the red wall.

Make an inventory of the spaces for which you need things.  I suggest photographing those locations and note measurements.  Do not be overly concerned about the color of your sofa and walls.  You are looking for pieces that will make you smile every day, not something that is the perfect shade of green.
Also, the style does not have to match your decor.  An abstract painting in a traditional living room is much more interesting than just another landscape. Consider different mediums. You can choose from oil paintings, photography, glass and unlimited sculptural objects.
Bigger is better than too small. Fill up space and make a dramatic statement.

This piece which is the focal point of the room is by a hometown girl and accomplished artist, Rosemary Pierce.  The clients and I worked with Rosemary via Etsy.

Where do you find these fabulous pieces?  Here comes the fun part!  Treat yourself to some art gallery visits.  Don't be intimidated.   The prices may be surprisingly less high than you think. Do, however, expect to pay more than Hobby Lobby.  Do yourself a favor.  Put some money aside for art and prepare to make an investment in smiles.  Even if some of your gallery visits are beyond your range, you are expanding your horizons and learning.  You will come across something that speaks to you, that you can also afford.  Visit your local galleries and art shows.

An inherited piece that was not a particular favorite was given new framing and has now found new love in the perfect location to complement the design of the master suite.

Etsy is a great online source.  Many artists demonstrate their work there, and you can see a good representation of their style. Many of them will do the piece custom for you.  Then there's always Ebay but beware. I find it is sometimes difficult to see really what the piece looks like there.  Because Etsy is geared more to artists, I find their images to be better representations.  You are essentially entering the artist's online gallery.  Another website that I love is 1stdibs.  If you have never looked at 1stdibs, you are in for a treat.  There are fabulous antique, vintage, and unique items for sale in fashion and interior design there.  It is a beautiful website.  Be certain to sign up for their Saturday Sale notifications.
Don't discount the pieces that Grandma gave you or items you might find at an estate sale. Take another look at look at those pieces.  They might find new life with a professional cleaning and a new frame.
