When To Hire An Interior Designer

You've got a building or remodeling project on the horizon, and you feel a bit overwhelmed. You have a vague idea of what you want, but need help to pulling it all together. An interior designer can save you money and headaches, but when should you get the designer involved?

The simple answer is, the sooner, the better.

Reasons to hire a designer at the Planning stage:
The interior designer can be a valuable asset when designing the floorplan. Your designer can make the space of the rooms work for the desired use. With your lifestyle and needs in mind, they'll plan the furniture and built-ins to ensure the most efficient and attractive use of space. The designer may also have suggestions for individual architectural elements that help complete the vision. This early-on collaboration can also assist you in getting a handle on your budget. An experienced interior designer will work alongside your contractor - they've got a good idea what construction costs and can help you get the most bang for your buck.

Reasons to hire a designer at the Pre-construction Stage:
Flooring selections will have an impact on the slab. At the framing stage, the designer can play a critical role in being sure precise blocking is in place for items that will provide extra support for individual things to be wall-mounted. As sheetrock goes up, the designer needs to be on-hand to specify the correct finish for the design. Some rooms may be getting wallcovering, and a smooth finish is essential for the best result. Knowing these kinds of decisions ahead of time will save money in unnecessary re-dos. An interior designer can make cabinetry decisions a painless process. They have the know-how to communicate with carpenters to fulfill your needs and aesthetic vision. If your designer has been with you early on, they will have the specifications for all fixtures and appliances that go along with the cabinetry and a plan to make it work efficiently.

Reasons to hire your designer at the Finishing stage:
Nearing the end of the construction stage? It's not too late to bring on a designer! The right designer can still help select colors and make some difficult choices for you. If you're not sure how you feel about wallpaper, or look at all the thousands of choices of chandeliers and feel your head begin to spin, your designer can deal with all these things FOR you.

An interior designer does so much more than just pick pretty colors and fabrics. Although what seems like the end of a project and the most fun for most people, this is actually where the project should begin. All the nitty-gritty details come after. Hire an interior designer early on. Convey all your hopes and dreams for your space to your designer from the beginning, and they can help you achieve those goals AND avoid costly mistakes.
